About Us

What began with the purchase of a serger sewing machine many years ago has now morphed into a little business nestled into the north woods of Minnesota, surrounded by the beauty of all the seasons.

Fleece was becoming a popular fabric in the early 90s and was ideal for colder climates because of its light weight and insulating properties. A serger is a great machine for sewing this type of fabric. I found a mitten pattern that looked intriguing and I began sewing with my new machine. After making a pair or two for myself, I made them for family and friends and also was getting requests from others for mitts. I decided to start selling mittens in the craft fair market. That was the beginning of Sew Many Mitts. Family obligations put mitten making on hold for a few years and was reignited when my daughter requested wool sweater mittens for her friends for gifts. In the spirit of re-purposing, we started the hunt for wool sweaters and plunged into the wool mitten business. This has been the main focus and passion for the past 14 years.

The making of mittens involves many steps. It starts with the search for wool sweaters from thrift stores, rummage sales and wherever else they can be found. We wash, dry, sort, cut, pair and sew the wool. The fleece linings are cut and sewn followed by the mitten assembly and finishing processes to make them available for purchase. What is the most frequent comment from visitors to the production area? “Wow!! I never knew there was so much involved in making mittens. This is incredible!!”

Sew Many Mitts produces high quality warm mittens for hands of all ages. Mittens are a great fashion accessory. When you need to be outside in colder weather, you need to keep your hands warm. We strive to offer a wide variety of color combinations to include in your outdoor wardrobe. This company is a successful example of a family and neighborhood business venture, providing smiles, laughter, emotional/financial support to each who has found their place to create and shine.
